A/B testing can be a powerful tool to help you optimise different parts of your business. For this article, I’ll mainly be focusing on how A/B testing helps you create the best content possible. Even the smallest change can create a huge difference.
While A/B testing is important, you should know how to do it properly, so you get the most accurate results. Accurate results mean you can make more informed decisions about your content moving forward.
Let’s get stuck in and explore more about how you can use A/B testing to optimise your copy:
Setting Up A/B Testing
You must have a good foundation, and then you can build up from there. So, what do you have to do to set up A/B testing properly? Well, think about:
- Goals – Before getting stuck into the nitty-gritty, you need to establish what your goals of testing are. Are you trying to boost engagement, get more conversions or increase your click-through rate? The goals of testing will impact how you go about setting up this campaign.
- Testing Framework – How are you going to measure the results from your A/B testing? Having the right framework and tools in place is important. The good news is that there are plenty of free A/B testing tools out there that you can try out. I recommend trying a free tool to see how it all works before paying for something.
A/B Testing Strategies
When it comes to your content, there are a few key areas that you should look to include in your A/B testing. I walk you through some of the most important areas:
- Headlines/ Subject Lines – The headline/ subject line (for email marketing) is probably the most important piece of content, as it usually decides if a user continues to read on or not. Some strategies for headlines/ subject lines would be to try short, punchy copy against a longer, more descriptive one.
- Call-to-Actions (CTAs) – This includes both the copy and placement of your CTAs. CTAs are what encourage users to convert, so you should be looking to A/B test this area as well. Slightly varying the copy and placement (and frequency) of your CTAs can garner different results.
- Body Copy – A lot more variance can be done in body copy, and it’s the way you can connect with users and build trust/ authority with them. Your messaging can be tested through several changes. For example, you could focus more on telling a story, or instead focus on features/ benefits only.
