Clichés aren’t necessarily a bad thing, and a little sprinkling in your copy here and there is okay. However, if you’re striving for originality, it is best to avoid using too many clichés. Too many clichés can also make your content boring, and no one wants boring content!
Instead, you should look to focus on original and fresh content that is engaging and hooks the users in. Think about your brand’s voice more, and use specific words that connect with both your brand and potential customers.
So, let’s take a look at some of the key strategies you can use to avoid clichés in your copy:
Be Specific
I touched on this in the introduction – it’s important to be as specific as possible. Instead of using clichés, explain the reasoning behind them. For example, don’t say you treat customers like they are family; instead, explain how you treat customers well.
Question Everything
Your first instinct is probably to use a cliché, and I know I am guilty of this. So, it’s a good idea to question everything. If you’re like me and instantly go to a cliché, then take a step back and look for a more authentic way to phrase what you’re trying to say, in a way that seems more genuine to your audience.
Sometimes it’s better to step away from writing altogether and get back to reading. It’s a good idea to read all different sorts of content, books of all genres, magazines, newsletters, and more. The wider your scope, the better, as this exposes you to all sorts of different styles.
Read Aloud
Following on from the previous point, not only should you have a wide scope of reading, but you should also try to read aloud as much as possible. Reading aloud is one of the easiest ways to pick up on awkward or overused phrasing that you can make a mental note to include in your own copy.
Note: You should also be reading your own content aloud. This helps you pick up on anything that can be rephrased.
Inject Emotion & Honesty
Personal experiences are a great way to add genuine feeling and make your copy feel more real and truly unique. It shows you’re not simply following a template, and can help signify to readers that you are an expert in your industry.
Get Feedback
Reading and editing your own content is important, but if you can get someone else to take a second look, this is even more effective. It can be difficult to pick up on your own mistakes, so having someone come in who has never seen this piece of content before can more easily pick up on clichés and more.
