When it comes to writing, you want to leave the biggest impact possible. Even the best can make mistakes, we are only human after all ❤️ But, if mistakes are made, it is important to learn from them and see how you can improve in the future.
I’ve put together seven common copywriting mistakes that you should know including information on how to avoid them:
1. No Clear Structure
Structure is key and if you don’t know what you’re trying to say the content probably won’t be very effective. To avoid this problem, make sure you take the time to plan out your work. Heading can be another useful tool to break up the content.
2. Too Sales-Focused
Don’t be that person. That pushy salesperson. No one really likes them, do they? If your content reads like a constant sales pitch, it can leave a sour taste in your audience’s mouth 🍋 Instead, show how your products/ services are better than your competitors and place your CTAs (Call To Action) strategically on the page.
3. Keyword Stuffing
SEO and copywriting can work together, but not if you’re one to keyword stuff! I don’t know why people still feel the need to stuff as many keywords into their content. Google doesn’t like it and more importantly, your readers don’t like it. You should look to prioritise your keywords and ensure you are writing with your customers in mind (not a search engine).
4. Forgetting your Brand’s Voice
Oh, will someone please think about the branding! The tone of voice used can shape your brand’s identity and help you build trust and authority with your customers. Whenever you write anything, no matter if it is an email or a blog, make sure you are consistent with your brand’s voice.
5. Poor CTA
No pressure, but a lot is riding on your CTA. So, if you have a weak CTA, it can really impact things. Your CTA should be clear, so readers know exactly what you want them to do and think about different ways you can make it stand out from the rest of the page (it should be eye-catching).
6. Over Complicating
You may be an expert in your area, but your customers probably aren’t. So, avoid using overly complicated content, like too much jargon, for example. The last thing you want to do is confuse your customers or make them feel stupid. Make sure you explain things in plain English and use short sentences while being as direct as possible.
7. Overlooking Platform
There are many avenues that potential customers can find your content, from social media to email to your website. When creating content, you must consider the platform your content will appear on. For example, it’s a good idea to change things up, social media should see short and sweet content, while longer content will be on your website.
It’s important you learn from any mistakes you make. However, if you don’t have the time or skills to produce the level of content your business deserves, make sure you reach out! I have a stack of experience in bringing client’s ideals to life 🎉
