Tips for Leveraging FOMO in Your Copywriting

Want customers to make a purchase decision quickly? Use FOMO! The fear of missing out is deeply embedded in our DNA. Whether it be limited stock or something that everyone else is doing, people simply don’t want to feel like they aren’t a part of something everyone else is.

There are specific aspects of your copywriting that can help you convey a sense of urgency. So, if you’re ready to tap into that FOMO, here are some tips that I always use in my own content for my clients:

Establish Scarcity & Urgency

FOMO is all about urgency, so focus on aspects like limited-time offers, displaying when stock is low, and a countdown timer. Limited-time offers are a great way to suck customers in, and I am guilty of it myself. This could include offering discounts that are only available for a certain amount of time.

If you sell a specific product, you can display a low stock icon when the specific item is running low. This can also signify to customers that the item is popular. Another idea is to use countdown timers around your website; this signifies to customers that there is a specific end date and they must take action before the time runs out.

Create Social Proof & Sense of Belonging

If everyone else is doing it, then others might feel like they are missing out. The perfect example of this recently is the Labubu phenomenon. Labubu seemingly came out of nowhere, and now every man and their dog wants to get on board with it.

To build social proof, it’s important to showcase the popularity of your products. This includes displaying how many others have purchased and using customer reviews to showcase how many people love the product. If you have the budget, you can always go down the line of engaging with an influencer to promote your product.

Build Hype & Curiosity

Another tip for leveraging FOMO in your content is to build hype and curiosity. This could include teasing future releases, where you can feature small snippets and behind-the-scenes access to build excitement for something you’re about to release.

It’s a good idea to encourage interaction, like polls and comments, for your customers to discuss what they think the new product will be. You can even try to be mysterious with your copy by dropping hints and clues that your customers might be able to pick up on before the release.

Use Clear Call to Actions (CTA)

Lastly, you don’t want to do all this work and then fall at the last hurdle. Producing a limp CTA is one of the biggest copywriting mistakes you can make! So, make sure you take enough time to produce CTAs that will actually do their job and convert.

Make sure you use strong verbs that are action-oriented. Options like “Don’t Miss Your Chance” and “Act Now” can help promote instant action. You don’t want to sell your customers a dummy either, so make sure you are honest with your CTAs. If you are going to end one limited-time sale only to start another one instantly, you will lose credibility.

As a sucker for FOMO tactics myself, I am well-equipped to help you and your business out when it comes to copywriting to leverage FOMO. If you’re looking to create urgency with your sales, I’m here to help out 🫶
