The Role of Copywriting in Influencer Marketing

The Role of Copywriting in Influencer Marketing

Many brands are looking to dabble in influencer marketing in 2026, if they haven’t already. Influencer marketing is a type of social media advertising where brands connect with influencers who have a dedicated and engaged following, which could be from any social media platform, like Instagram or TikTok, for example.

You don’t have to run a multi-million dollar brand to use influencer marketing. Many brands connect with influencers with smaller followings, which usually means it can be more cost-effective.

When connecting with the right influencer, it can build trust and credibility of your brand, while also improving brand awareness, engagement, and ultimately sales. The influencer will create content to promote your brand (i.e. the products and/ or services you provide) to their audience.

But how does copywriting come into the mix? Well, copywriting does play a fairly important role. From creating the captions for the social media posts to writing the script for any potential video content, there should be plenty of focus on copywriting in influencer marketing.

In this article, I’ll break down the key roles of copywriting in influencer marketing:

Balance Between Promotion & Content

While influencer marketing is predominantly about promoting your brand, you need to strike a healthy balance between promotion and quality content. Engaging copy will help you find the balance between the two.

Your copy should be entertaining and informative while also encouraging viewers to take action. Avoid the hard sell, which tends to create friction with viewers and can cause them to skip or ignore branded content.

Improved Authenticity

Influencers have to mark social media posts as an “ad” when promoting a paid partnership with another brand. This means it is obvious to viewers what it is, and while some may be sceptical, quality copy can ease the friction.

Avoid using stiff or overly corporate language. Instead, lean into the influencer’s unique voice and make the copy feel as though it is genuinely coming from them. It shouldn’t feel like a forced advertisement the influencer is making in order to earn more money.

Storytelling

Another key role of copywriting in influencer marketing stems from storytelling. You can create a more engaging post by telling a story rather than listing all the features of your brand’s product/ service.

Try to weave your product/ service into a story that resonates with the influencer’s audience. This means focusing on their problems, aspirations, and desires. Storytelling helps make the promotion more memorable and trigger emotions in viewers.

Drive Conversions

Saving the best for last here, as copywriting in influencer marketing can help drive more conversions. And isn’t that the whole point of teaming up with an influencer? The right copy can help turn passive engagement (including likes and comments) into measurable results (including clicks, sign-ups, and purchases).

To drive as many conversions as possible, you should use clear and concise language in your copy. Plus, add in call-to-actions (CTAs) in the right places within the content. Your CTAs should be direct, simply guiding viewers to what you want them to do next.
