The Future of Copywriting: Trends to Watch in the Next Decade

The Future of Copywriting Trends to Watch in the Next Decade

Change is inevitable, and in copywriting, we are seeing changes faster than at any other point in history. Technology (and AI) obviously have a major influence on the changes within the industry. Shifting consumer expectations have influenced the way copywriters create.

So, we know what’s happened in the past, but what about the future? I’ve got my crystal ball out and use this article to go through some of the future trends to watch out for in the next 10 years or so. If you want to stay ahead of the curve, certain trends are likely to define the future of copywriting.

All the top trends to watch, in my opinion, include:

AI: The Collaborator

It seems like every time I open up LinkedIn, someone is saying AI (like ChatGPT) is going to replace copywriters. Obviously, as a copywriter myself, I hope that doesn’t happen! But, I also don’t think it’s going to happen either. I think AI will become more of a collaboration tool, not an outright replacement.

Factors like human insight, emotional intelligence, and brand judgement will become a premium. This is where the real value of a professional copywriter lies. So, with an AI collaboration, this can free up copywriters to focus on aspects like strategy and creativity.

Strategy > Writing Skills

Don’t get me wrong, writing skills are clearly one of the most important things a copywriter can have. But in the next 10 years, that will become more of a given, and copywriters will have to establish more of a way to differentiate themselves.

Strategy development is one of the key areas I think copywriters will hone in on. More businesses will be looking for copywriters who understand branding and the full customer journey. To stay relevant, copywriters will have to think beyond the page and move closer to a growth strategy.

Short-Form Copy World Domination

There is still a time and place for long-form copy, but in a world with shortening attention spans, I think that short-form copy will reign supreme. Short-form copy is perfect for a raft of different touch points, from social media platforms, paid ads, product interfaces, and more.

Long-form copy won’t fall by the wayside. This type of content will still be essential for trust-building and high-consideration decisions. However, long-form copy will need to earn the attention of readers even faster for it to become fully effective.

Knee-Deep Personalisation

We are all used to that surface-level type of personalisation that includes our name, and maybe our birthday. However, I expect the level of personalisation to go much deeper in the future. Data is key, and I’m seeing more and more companies investing resources in data collection/ analysis.

This means that copywriters will need to start thinking more about creating messages that are adaptable depending on where and how the customer is interacting with the brand. Relevance is key and will become the primary driver of conversions.

The future is now! If you’re looking to futureproof your business through these new copywriting trends, I’m here to help 💕
