How to Write CTAs That People Actually Click

Call-to-Actions (CTA) are one of the most important aspects of any website. It’s where interest turns into action. You can have amazing copy, strong positioning, and even an engaged audience, but if you don’t put enough effort into your CTA, results will likely suffer.

CTAs are more than just slapping a “Buy Now” button on your website. There are many different aspects to consider that can make a CTA more effective than others. The right words that are placed correctly can increase clicks and conversions.

So, ready to find out how you can write CTAs that will attract more clicks? Keep reading as I break things down for you:

Make Next Steps Clear

What do you want the reader to do when they click on the CTA? This needs to be unmistakably clear. There shouldn’t be any guessing about what happens when they click. Vague CTAs are bad for a couple of reasons, but mainly, they create hesitation and reduce action. So, use clear and specific language that removes uncertainty.

Proper Placement

You could use the right words in your CTAs, but if they aren’t added in the right place, all that work could be for nothing. It’s important to take the time to consider where your CTAs would be most effective. CTAs should appear where readers naturally pause or when it’s time to make a decision. This could be after key benefits or explanations.

Focus on Value

You’ve probably noticed there are a lot of “Submit” or “Click Here” CTAs out there. But, they aren’t really that effective because they simply describe the action and ignore the benefit. When you focus on the benefit, you’re seizing the opportunity to motivate! So, shift the focus to what your potential customer can gain when clicking on the CTA.

Test & Refine

In all likelihood, you’re not going to get it right the first time. It’s all about testing and refining over time. This doesn’t have to be major changes either. Small changes in wording, placement, colour, and overall style can lead to significant differences in performance. Test and track results to help you understand what works well with your desired audience.

Keep it Short & Focused

This is not the time for War and Peace. Your CTAs don’t need to be long to be effective. I’ve actually seen that some of the most effective CTAs are shorter. This is usually because they are easier to process and, therefore, act on. Clarity and brevity work hand-in-hand, and they can help drive action.

Reduce Perceived Risk

A lot of the time, there’s going to be a barrier between you and a potential customer. Hesitation in these situations usually comes from uncertainty. Are readers thinking they are going to commit to something they aren’t ready for? Effective CTAs work well to lower the perceived stakes, making it easier for readers to commit.

If your CTAs are falling flat, it may be time for a little revamp. I can help make your CTAs shine, increasing clicks and conversions. Reach out and let’s get cracking 🤩
