The Role of Empathy in High-Performing Copy

Empathy should always play an important role in your copy. Before readers can trust who you are (and what you’re trying to sell them!), they need to feel like you understand their challenges, goals, and concerns.

Instead of focusing solely on the products or services you provide, empathetic copy puts the audience first. It acknowledges their experiences, answers any potential questions they may have, and offers solutions that actually feel relevant.

High-performing copy is persuasive because it connects with people on a deeper level. When your audience feels like you understand them completely, they’re more likely to engage with what you’re saying, and potentially even take the next step.

In this article, I take a closer look at how empathy works in high-performing copy, and how you can integrate it into your messaging:

Understand Your Audience

It would be pretty difficult to empathise with your audience if you don’t really understand them in the first place! Understanding your audience is all about who they are, what they’re trying to achieve, and what’s standing in their way of achieving it. Look deeper than demographics and focus more on motivations, frustrations, and aspirations.

Show You Understand Their Challenges

No one likes the hard sell. So, your copy should help people feel seen and valued before you pitch them. When your copy demonstrates an understanding of their situation, it’s an easy way to establish credibility right from the beginning. Acknowledge their challenges first instead of making assumptions or jumping straight to your offer.

Helping > Selling

If you’re looking to take the next step up from average to high-performing copy, thinking about intent is key. Your copy shouldn’t necessarily be created purely to sell, as that feels too transactional. Instead, focus on copy that aims to help your potential customer, as this will build trust. Empathy helps shift the focus from what you want to what the customer wants.

Build Relationships (Not Just Conversions)

Creating high-performing copy isn’t just about the quick fix sale; it’s also about creating a positive experience that encourages people to come back time after time. When your copy is consistently helpful, authentic, and understands your customers, they associate your brand with trustworthiness and reliability.

Use Language Your Audience Understands

There are many different ways you can embed empathy into your copy. So, make sure it’s used in the type of language that your audience will understand. Avoid using technical language, jargon, or corporate buzzwords, as this can create distance between your brand and your target audience.

Address Emotions & Logic

When a customer makes the decision to purchase, it is usually based on a mixture of emotion and logic. Empathetic copy does its part to acknowledge both the practical and emotional sides of the decision-making process. It recognises aspects like ambitions, uncertainties, and frustrations, while still providing clear details that support rational thinking.
